what is diabetes
diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood this occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels or when the body cells become resistant to insulin
there are 3 types of diabetes :
- type 1 diabetes : An autoimmune disease in which the body immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas
- type 2 diabetes: A metabolic disorder characterized by insulin secretion
- gestational diabetes : A type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy usually in the second or third trimester
- increased thirst and urination
- fatigue
- blurred vision
- slow healing of cuts and wounds
- tingling or numbness in hands and feet
- heart disease and stroke
- kidney damage and failure
- nerve damage ( neuropathy )
- blindness and vision loss
- foot damage and amputation
- medications ( oral or injectable )
- lifestyle changes ( healthy diet , regular exercise , weight management )
- monitoring blood sugar levels
- regular health check ups
LIFE STYLE FACTORS :
- OBESITY AND SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE : A diet high in sugar , salt and unhealthy fats combined with a lack of physical activity can increase the risks of developing type 2 diabetes
- poor diet : consuming of high amounts of sugary drinks refined carbohydrates and saturated fats can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes
- physical inactivity : A sedentary lifestyle can lead to weight gain insulin resistance and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Genetic and environmental factors :
- family history : Having a family history of diabetes increase the risk of developing the disease
- age : The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with age especially age of 45
- ethnicity : certain ethnic groups such as African , Americans ,Hispanics , Latinos ,American Indians are at a higher risk of developing diabetes
other factors :
- Stress : chronic stress can raise blood sugar levels and increase the risk of developing diabetes
- sleep deprivation : poor sleep quality and duration can disrupt insulin Sensitivity and increase the risk of developing diabetes
- Certain medications : certain medications such as steroids and certain psychiatric medications can increase the risk of developing diabetes
these factors contribute to the growing prevalence of diabetes worldwide making it a common and significant public health concern
Diabetes cab be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes and unhealthy habits here are some ways to reduce the risk o developing diabetes
Healthy diet :
- Eat a balanced diet : focus on whole unprocessed foods like vegetables , fruits , whole grains , lean protein and unhealthy fats
- limit sugary drinks : Avoid sugary drinks like soda , sports drinks , and sweetened teas
- Choose complex carbohydrates : Include complex carbohydrates like whole grains , fruits and vegetables in your diet
Regular physical activity :
- Aim for least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise : Engage in physical activities like brisk walking , cycling , swimming
- Incorporate strength training : Include strength training exercise in your routine to built muscle and improve insulin sensitivity
- Achieve a healthy weight : if your over weight or obese losing weight can reduce your risk of developing diabetes
- Maintain weight loss : Focus on sustainable lifestyle changes to maintain weight loss over time
- Get enough sleep : Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night to help regulate blood sugar levels
- Manage stress : Engage in stress reducing activities like yoga , meditation or deep breathing exercises
